Why teach vocabulary?
Research shows that vocabulary is closely linked to academic success.
There are a great number of vocabulary intervention strategies. The following types of interventions are particularly beneficial in assisting Intermediate EAL students acquire new vocabulary.
Visualizing vocabulary is one way of retaining new words. Children can illustrate new words from a class reader about the circus for example within a framework such as the template below.
Vocabulary four square is another activity used to develop and increase a student’s vocabulary knowledge. Children select unfamiliar vocabulary words within a meaningful context during small group reading. Children then write the vocabulary word in the center of the chart and fill in the other boxes with synonyms, antonyms, descriptions, drawings and sentences. This helps to solidify their understanding of new vocabulary words.
